Seattle detectives are investigating three shootings that left four others injured, including a 21-year-old man hospitalized in serious condition.
SEATTLE — Three separate shootings in Seattle’s Belltown area over the course of Sunday left three people dead and four others injured, culminating in the late-night killing of a 17-year-old boy near Elliott Avenue and Bell Street.
The latest shooting was reported shortly after 11:44 p.m. Sunday. Officers found the teenager suffering from a gunshot wound and provided aid until Seattle Fire Department medics arrived. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene. A 21-year-old man also was wounded and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition.
Police said an altercation happened shortly before the late-night shooting, but investigators had not disclosed what caused the confrontation or who was involved. No suspect was in custody as of the latest update, and police had not released a suspect description or a possible motive.
The shooting followed two other deadly incidents investigated in Belltown earlier Sunday. Shortly after 12:42 a.m., dispatchers received reports of shooting victims in the 300 blocks of Denny Way and Clay Street. Officers found two wounded men, both of whom were taken to Harborview Medical Center.
One of the men, who was initially listed in critical condition, later died at the hospital. The other was hospitalized in serious condition. Police said another man and a woman later arrived at Harborview seeking treatment for gunshot wounds connected to the same shooting, bringing the number of people wounded in that incident to four, including the man who died.
Investigators said an altercation involving three people occurred in the street shortly before that gunfire. Police used information from the department’s Real Time Crime Center as part of the initial investigation. Authorities also said street racing had occurred at the same intersection before the shooting but said the racing and gunfire were not connected.
Less than two hours after that initial shooting was reported, police responded to another case near Third Avenue and Blanchard Street. Officers found a woman wounded inside a parked vehicle. She was taken to Harborview in critical condition and later died. Police said a suspect had fired several shots into the vehicle before leaving the area.
Police said the two early-morning shootings were not related. The department had not announced a connection between those cases and the later shooting at Elliott Avenue and Bell Street. The circumstances of all three remained under investigation, and officials had not publicly identified the people who died.
The late-night killing brought the toll from the three Belltown shootings to three dead and four injured. The incidents occurred within roughly 24 hours in the same central Seattle neighborhood, but investigators were handling the shootings as distinct cases based on the information publicly available Monday.
Interim Police Chief Andre Sayles, Assistant Chief Nicole Powell, homicide investigators and crime scene personnel responded to the late-night scene. Homicide detectives were continuing to determine what led to the gunfire and who was responsible.
