GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — In late January, the community was shaken by the tragic shooting death of 16-year-old Zaquavious Dawkins outside a local restaurant. The suspect in the case, 16-year-old Sean James Curtis Simpson, appeared in court on Monday to face charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in connection to the incident.
The victim, known as “Tank” to loved ones, was found shot behind Los Arcos restaurant on North Chester Street before succumbing to his injuries at a nearby hospital. Simpson, who was arrested three days after the shooting, is being prosecuted as an adult in this case. During his court appearance, Simpson was assigned a public defender who has been working closely with him on his legal defense.
Family members of Dawkins were present in the courtroom, expressing a range of emotions as they seek justice for their lost loved one. Dawkins’ grandmother, Evelena Dawkins, tearfully described the toll that the legal process is taking on their family, emphasizing the irreplaceable void left by his absence.
As the judicial process unfolds, the family remains conflicted, understanding that no legal outcome can bring back Dawkins, a vibrant young man who was involved in sports at Ashbrook High School and proudly served in the JROTC program. Despite their pain, they are determined to see the case through and seek closure.
The investigation into the tragic incident is ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in the process. The community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the senseless violence, with emotions running high as they seek to understand and cope with the loss of a promising young life.
For those impacted by the tragedy, support is available through WCNC Charlotte’s More Than A Number initiative, providing a platform to share memories and details about loved ones affected by such incidents. Through this program, the community can come together to honor the lives lost and provide solace in the midst of grief.
