Court records show the 23-year-old suspect faces attempted murder and kidnapping charges after his arrest in northwest Baltimore.
BALTIMORE — A 23-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and other offenses after a 15-year-old girl was found stabbed Thursday night in northwest Baltimore, according to police and court records.
Baltimore police identified the suspect as Abubakarr Barrie. Investigators arrested him Friday in the 3700 block of Garrison Boulevard, a day after officers responded to the 3800 block of Belle Avenue for a reported stabbing. The girl is expected to survive her injuries.
According to court records cited by local news outlets, Barrie faces first- and second-degree attempted murder charges, multiple assault charges, kidnapping and false imprisonment. The charges are allegations, and the available records do not establish that Barrie has been convicted of any crime related to the case.
Officers were called to Belle Avenue at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday. Police said they found the 15-year-old receiving medical treatment after suffering a stab wound. The teenager told officers that she had escaped from a basement in the area and had been stabbed by a man she did not know.
Police initially released few details about how the girl came to be in the basement, where that basement was located or what happened before she was found. Authorities also did not publicly disclose a possible motive. Those questions remained unresolved in the information available Sunday.
The girl remained sedated Friday as detectives investigated, police said at the time. Authorities said she was expected to survive. Her name has not been released, consistent with the limited public information available about the juvenile victim.
Barrie’s arrest marked a significant development from the initial investigation, when police had described the person accused of stabbing the girl only as an unknown man. Authorities have not publicly detailed what evidence led investigators to Barrie or how they connected him to the case.
Investigators have also not publicly explained the circumstances underlying the kidnapping and false imprisonment charges. The teenager’s statement about escaping from a basement has been part of the police account, but officials have not released further information about where she had been or how long she may have been there.
Barrie was scheduled for a bail review Monday morning. The case remains in the early stages of the court process, and additional details about the allegations could emerge as charging documents and other court proceedings become available.
