WASHINGTON CITY, UT – The tranquility of a vacation rental was shattered when police discovered Andrea Matram, a 47-year-old mother, murdered in a chilling case involving her teenage daughter and a friend. The investigation began on March 23, sparked by a call from cleaning staff who found Andrea’s body after noticing the garage door was left ajar.
Authorities identified the suspects as 16-year-olds Maha Sescu, also known as Bella, and her friend Abigail Flanigan, or Jay. Both teens were staying with Andrea at the rental property, and evidence at the crime scene suggested a violent struggle. Officers found multiple stab wounds on Andrea and discovered personal items submerged in a toilet, pointing to an attempt to destroy evidence.
Bella and Jay’s backgrounds reveal troubled histories. Bella had been in a residential treatment facility for three years, while Jay had recently been removed from a similar environment by her parents. Frank Matram, Andrea’s husband and Bella’s stepfather, disclosed that Bella’s diary contained disturbing entries expressing hatred towards her mother and a desire to kill her.
Following the murder, the teens allegedly fled in a Hyundai rented by Andrea. Surveillance cameras tracked their journey across state lines, providing a timeline of their escape. The police have since apprehended the pair, though details of their capture remain undisclosed.
Tragically, Andrea’s death occurred just before her 48th birthday, a milestone she had referenced in a heartfelt Facebook post. The case has moved to the courts, where both Bella and Jay are facing serious charges. Despite being tried as adults, the judge has ordered their identities be protected during the proceedings.
Legal challenges have arisen concerning Abigail’s detention location, which poses difficulties for her legal representation. The court is considering options to address these concerns, but a resolution has yet to be determined.
The case has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the unpredictable and often volatile nature of family dynamics. As the legal process unfolds, many are left grappling with the reality of such a violent act committed by two young individuals.
