Precinct officials first said the driver escaped safely, but sheriff’s investigators later confirmed that the 51-year-old man died.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Authorities corrected an early account of a rollover crash near the Grand Parkway after the Harris County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the driver died after his SUV entered a retention pond Sunday.
Harris County Precinct 4 authorities initially reported that the driver had been able to get out of the overturned vehicle safely. The sheriff’s office later said the driver, identified as 51-year-old Joseph Mariano, was removed from the vehicle, received CPR and was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The changing information emerged as several public-safety agencies responded to the pond near Northcrest Drive, State Highway 99 and Gosling Road in the Spring area. Early reports focused on a vehicle resting upside down in the water, while officials continued determining who had been inside and whether anyone had been hurt.
Sheriff’s investigators later said Mariano was driving a Nissan Rogue east in the 6000 block of North Grand Parkway West. The SUV drifted from the outside lane onto the outside shoulder, continued down a grassy embankment and entered the pond.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Beau Beaty said the vehicle went airborne before landing in the water near an Amazon facility. Photographs released by Precinct 4 showed the SUV overturned with its wheels above the surface of the pond.
First responders performed CPR after removing Mariano from the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. He was transported to a hospital but did not survive. Authorities did not report that another person had been injured in the crash.
The conflicting early reports reflected information released while the response and investigation were still developing. Officials did not explain what led to the initial statement that the driver had exited safely or when responders determined that Mariano had suffered fatal injuries.
Traffic on the Grand Parkway was restricted while investigators worked at the scene. Authorities did not immediately provide a final timeline for the emergency response or say how long the traffic restrictions lasted.
The cause of the crash remains unknown. Investigators have not announced whether speed, impairment, a medical emergency, mechanical trouble or roadway conditions played a role.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office continued reviewing the crash and had not released additional findings as of Monday.
