EUGENE, Ore. – A former police officer, Elias Huizar, implicated in a double homicide in the Tri-Cities area, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a pursuit with Oregon State Patrol on Southbound I-5. The incident unfolded after Huizar allegedly abducted his one-year-old son, who was later found unharmed in the hands of Oregon State Troopers.

Authorities had issued an Amber Alert at 9:44 p.m. on Monday for Huizar’s son, suspecting that he might be attempting to flee to Mexico. The alert was called off once the child was safely located. During the high-speed chase, Huizar was involved in two separate crashes, leading to a confrontation with troopers where gunfire was exchanged, but no injuries were reported.

The tragic events involving Huizar unfolded in West Richland, where two homicides occurred – one at Wiley Elementary School and another at Huizar’s residence. The victims have been identified as his ex-wife, Amber Marie Rodriguez, and his 17-year-old girlfriend, Angelica Santos. Fundraisers have been set up through GoFundMe to support the families of the deceased.

Angelica Santos’ aunt, Samantha Deluna, spoke of her niece as a loving and caring individual, known affectionately as ‘Jelly’ within the family. Deluna revealed that Santos and Huizar met when he served as a school resource officer at her middle school. Despite the heartbreaking loss, the family finds solace in the knowledge that Angelica’s son is safe and surrounded by love and support.
