Suspect in car shooting freed within a day, deputies say

Authorities briefly urged people to avoid streets near Madison Avenue and College Oak Drive as they searched for a suspect.

NORTH HIGHLANDS, Calif. — Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies investigated reports Tuesday afternoon that a man fired a handgun at passing vehicles along a busy stretch near Madison Avenue and College Oak Drive, prompting a short-lived avoid-the-area alert while units moved in and secured nearby blocks.

Deputies said the call came in around 3 p.m. and drew patrols, a helicopter and a K-9 team to the corridor east of Interstate 80. The response temporarily tightened traffic through residential streets and strip-mall driveways as investigators worked to confirm what happened and whether any motorists were hit. No injuries were immediately reported. The episode matters because it unfolded in broad daylight near apartments and businesses that funnel commuters and students through the Madison–College Oak intersection, a high-traffic route in unincorporated Sacramento County.

Witnesses told deputies the gunman pointed a weapon toward traffic and then ran. Deputies fanned out across parking lots and fenced walkways while air support guided ground teams. Surveillance cameras from storefronts were pulled for review. In a brief update, the sheriff’s office described shots fired at “at least one car” and said the person of interest took off on foot toward a nearby apartment complex. Investigators canvassed for shell casings and checked vehicles that appeared to have fresh damage. Detectives said they were not aware of injuries, and they did not immediately release the suspect’s name.

By early evening, deputies said they had detained a man matching descriptions provided by callers and witnesses. They described a quick perimeter, aided by a helicopter orbit and a K-9 track that led toward a courtyard behind a cluster of two-story buildings. Store managers said detectives asked for video covering the 2:45–3:30 p.m. window. Motorists who pulled over along College Oak described hearing several sharp pops and seeing people duck behind cars at a gas station island. Investigators logged the cars believed to be involved and began contacting their owners for statements and repair photos. Officials emphasized that the immediate threat had passed.

Records show the intersection sits between North Highlands and Foothill Farms, areas where deputies routinely handle afternoon congestion from service roads off Madison Avenue. In recent months, sheriff’s air units have assisted ground teams in several felony stops along the same corridor. Tuesday’s response followed that playbook: quick perimeter, containment on footpaths that cut between complexes and strip centers, and a sweep of hedges and stairwells that can hide discarded evidence. No schools in the area reported lockdowns, and business owners said customers largely stayed inside until units cleared the scene.

Detectives said the case will be routed to investigators for evidence testing and interviews with motorists who reported damage. Booking decisions and any potential charges will be handled after prosecutors review reports and video. If charges are filed, an initial court appearance could be set later this week in Sacramento Superior Court. The sheriff’s office said additional statements and any edited surveillance clips may be released after investigators finish collecting witness accounts and reviewing footage.

As night fell, traffic normalized around Madison and College Oak and deputies pulled down perimeter tape from a driveway near an apartment carport. A tow truck operator checked one sedan for fresh punctures while residents stepped around evidence markers. “We heard the helicopter first, then the sirens,” said a cashier who watched from a storefront window. “Everyone stayed calm and waited until it was clear.”

Deputies said the scene was safe late Tuesday and that follow-up interviews would continue Wednesday, with any additional updates expected once evidence is processed.
