Suspect Detained for Allegedly Detonating Explosive Outside Alabama Attorney General’s Office

Montgomery, Alabama – Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert, 26, was apprehended for setting off an explosive device outside the office of Alabama’s attorney general, leading to federal charges against him for malicious use of an explosive and possession of an unregistered destructive device.

Law enforcement coordinator and public information officer for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Middle District of Alabama, Doug Howard, confirmed Calvert’s arrest. The incident occurred on February 24 at around 3:42 a.m., causing no injuries or damage to nearby structures. Calvert faced a potential prison sentence ranging from five to 20 years without parole upon his first court appearance.

US Attorney General Merrick Ross commended the collaborative efforts of the FBI, state, and local law enforcement in holding Calvert accountable for his alleged actions. Acting United States Attorney Jonathan Ross highlighted the arrest as a testament to the effective coordination between law enforcement and the judicial system.

An investigation led by the FBI Mobile Field Office, the Montgomery Resident Agency Office, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and the Alabama Attorney General’s Office looked into the case. The prosecution is being overseen by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Russell T. Duraski and Brett J. Talley for the Middle District of Alabama.
