Stabbing Rampage: Winnipeg Eateries Plagued by Violent Attacks

Winnipeg, Canada – A violent stabbing incident at a local Smitty’s restaurant was captured on video, marking the fourth attack at an eatery in Winnipeg in less than a year. This alarming trend has raised concerns among industry members, who are now focusing more on security and safety measures than ever before.

The incident took place on April 14 outside the Smitty’s location on St. James Street, where a 31-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon. Police attribute incidents like this to alcohol-fueled altercations that often result in serious consequences.

In a worrying pattern, this stabbing at Smitty’s is just one of four violent incidents to occur at eateries in the city over the past year, with another attack reported earlier this month at a Burger King on Osborne Street. The escalating violence has prompted restaurant owners to prioritize safety and security to protect both their staff and customers.

Mona Naghibzadeh, the owner of Next Stop Cafe, has firsthand experience dealing with various safety issues at her establishment, including racist rants, drug use, dine and dashes, and vandalism. She emphasized the need for constant vigilance in a challenging environment where unpredictability is a common occurrence.

Following the recent incidents, Naghibzadeh took proactive measures by installing new security cameras at the cafe. Her primary goal is to create a welcoming and secure environment for customers, where they can feel comfortable and at home.

In response to the concerning trend of violence at eateries, the Manitoba Restaurant and Food Services Association is scheduled to meet with Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham to discuss strategies for enhancing safety measures in the city. Meanwhile, police advise the public to remain vigilant and avoid engaging in volatile situations, urging them to contact law enforcement authorities if necessary.
