LAURENS COUNTY, Ga. — A deadly altercation on a charter bus early Saturday morning led to the arrest of a Georgia man accused of murder. The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident occurred around 3 a.m. while the bus was traveling along Interstate 16.
According to the authorities, Dexter Bernard Smith was taken into custody after allegedly stabbing another man during a dispute on the bus. Capt. Robbie Toney, who leads the investigations division of the sheriff’s office, noted that while the department has dealt with stabbings before, this type of lethal incident aboard a bus is unprecedented for them.
The bus was en route from Savannah to Atlanta when the confrontation escalated. Following the stabbing, the bus driver quickly pulled over and called 911, prompting a swift response from local deputies. Upon their arrival, deputies attempted to stabilize the victim until medical personnel could provide further assistance. Unfortunately, the man succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin.
Investigators have yet to ascertain the specifics of the argument that triggered the violence. Capt. Toney described the situation as particularly troubling, emphasizing the rarity of such events occurring in their jurisdiction. Smith allegedly used a knife during the altercation, marking a tragic end to what was intended to be an ordinary journey for the bus passengers.
Many of those on board had purchased tickets similar to those sold by established carriers like Greyhound, with passengers traveling for various reasons, including to catch flights or visit friends and family in Atlanta. Details regarding Smith’s intentions for his travel to Atlanta remain unclear, though it was confirmed he hails from Claxton, located about an hour’s drive from Savannah.
The scene of the stabbing was identified near mile marker 47 on Interstate 16. Smith faced multiple charges, including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime. He is currently being held at the Laurens County Jail, pending further legal proceedings. As the investigation continues, the community grapples with the shock of this violent incident on a public transport service.
