Officers had received reports about unusual and aggressive behavior before six family members were found dead in a Winfield home.
WINFIELD, Kan. — Police had received reports of erratic and aggressive behavior involving a Kansas father in the weeks before four young children and their parents were found dead, contacts that are receiving new attention as state investigators piece together what happened inside the family’s Winfield home.
The earlier calls did not provide police with information indicating that the Aug. 11 deaths were imminent, Winfield Police Chief Robbie DeLong said after the shooting. Investigators have since announced a major change in their understanding of the case: The Kansas Bureau of Investigation now says evidence indicates Ronald H. Williams Sr., 53, and Kelly L. George, 44, planned together to kill their four children and then themselves.
The children were Carol A. Williams, 9; Ronald H. Williams Jr., 7; Sarah K. Williams, 5; and Kelly M. Magee-Williams, 3. Police found all six members of the family dead inside a home in the 400 block of West 9th Avenue after an emergency call that began a response lasting more than two hours.
The call came at about 8:50 a.m. Police said a man identifying himself as Williams reported that his family was dead and that he was preparing to die by suicide. Officers were already in the area on another matter and reached the home quickly. They heard a gunshot while approaching the residence.
Officers withdrew and established a perimeter because they did not know whether anyone inside remained alive or whether an armed person still posed a threat. DeLong said the department treated the scene as a barricade situation based on the information available at the time. Police eventually breached the front door at about 10:57 a.m. and discovered the six bodies. The KBI was asked to assist minutes later.
In the days after the deaths, attention turned to police contacts with Williams before the shooting. DeLong said the department had received several calls involving behavior described as aggressive or erratic, including reports that Williams confronted and yelled at people. Officers had also responded to reports of gunfire near the family’s home but had been unable to determine the source.
DeLong said those encounters had not revealed information that led officers to expect the deaths that followed. The distinction is important as investigators examine what was known before the shooting: Reports of unusual conduct do not by themselves establish that a person intends to commit violence, and authorities have not said officers possessed a specific threat against the children before Aug. 11.
Neighbors have nevertheless expressed grief and questions about whether anything could have prevented the deaths. Some residents told local news organizations they had noticed troubling behavior or arguments around the home. Those accounts represent individual observations, and investigators have not said that any neighbor had advance knowledge of a plan to kill the children.
The KBI later said its evidence does not support the idea that a sudden argument or physical confrontation led to the killings that morning. Investigators instead believe Williams and George jointly planned the children’s deaths and their own deaths. The agency has not released the evidence underlying its conclusion about George’s involvement.
Investigators said they found records showing George had purchased a Taurus .38 Special revolver in February 2025 and that the gun was recovered at the scene. Authorities have not publicly established who fired each shot or said that possession of the firearm, by itself, proves George participated in the killings.
The evolving account illustrates why investigators often describe early findings as preliminary. Authorities initially said they believed Williams killed George and the four children before making the 911 call. The later KBI assessment assigns George an alleged role in planning the children’s deaths, while leaving important details about that conclusion undisclosed.
The KBI said no evidence currently points to anyone outside Williams and George as responsible for the shooting. The investigation remains underway, and the agency plans to submit its completed findings to the Cowley County attorney. Authorities have not announced a motive, and several questions about the planning and exact sequence of the deaths remain unresolved.
