A state senator is urging patience after prosecutors linked a violent confrontation to speculation surrounding Zenobia Weatherspoon’s death.
CHICAGO — The unexplained death of Zenobia “Zee” Weatherspoon has left her family and Chicago community seeking answers while her brother faces an attempted-murder charge over a shooting prosecutors say grew from suspicion surrounding the case.
A Cook County judge ordered Javan Weatherspoon held pending trial Thursday. Prosecutors allege that he confronted and shot a woman on July 19 because he believed she knew more than she had disclosed about his sister’s death. Zenobia Weatherspoon’s body had been discovered eight days earlier in an alley near 54th Street and Union Avenue.
The two cases remain legally separate. Authorities have not announced a cause or manner of death for Zenobia Weatherspoon, and no charges have been filed in connection with her death. Javan Weatherspoon has been charged in the later shooting, but the charge remains an allegation and does not establish guilt.
Prosecutors said the shooting victim was a friend of Zenobia Weatherspoon and one of the people who found her body. Court records allege that Javan Weatherspoon had repeatedly accused the woman of knowing something about his sister’s death before confronting her.
According to the prosecution’s detention filing, Weatherspoon approached the woman and demanded information about his sister. Prosecutors allege that he struck her with a firearm, shot her and later returned to fire a second shot that did not strike her.
The woman survived. Prosecutors said she suffered a gunshot wound and a fracture. A court order described her as unarmed and said she posed no threat when the shooting occurred.
The judge ordered Weatherspoon detained after finding that prosecutors had shown clear and convincing evidence that the case involved a detainable offense. The judge also found that Weatherspoon posed a threat to the woman and the community. The ruling keeps him in custody as the case moves through court but does not resolve the charge against him.
Illinois state Sen. Lakesia Collins said the violence added another layer of trauma to a community already shaken by Zenobia Weatherspoon’s death. Collins said she knew Weatherspoon and identified the shooting victim as her cousin.
Collins said speculation had spread among residents about who might have last seen Zenobia Weatherspoon and what occurred before her death. She urged people not to treat rumors as established facts while police and other authorities continue investigating.
“I really would love for people to allow this to play out, allow the investigators to bring the truth to the light, allow the justice system to work in the way it’s intended to work,” Collins said. “And allow the healing process to start.”
Collins also acknowledged the grief experienced by Javan Weatherspoon without excusing the conduct described by prosecutors. She said he loved his sister and wanted justice but stressed that investigators needed time to determine what happened.
Zenobia Weatherspoon’s family publicly identified her after a woman’s body was found inside a garbage can in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on July 11. Police responded to the alley that evening and opened a death investigation.
Family members and Collins said the woman was Zenobia Weatherspoon, but authorities initially declined to publicly name the person who was found. Her family said it recognized her through clothing shown in social media footage from the scene. Relatives and community leaders later asked people not to circulate the images.
Those appeals became part of a broader request to treat Weatherspoon as a person rather than focus only on the circumstances in which her body was found. Family members described her as an aspiring nurse who enjoyed reading, drawing and braiding hair.
The official questions at the center of the case remain unanswered. Authorities have not said how Zenobia Weatherspoon died, whether her death has been classified as a homicide or whether investigators have identified a suspect. The investigation continues as Javan Weatherspoon remains detained in the separate shooting case.
