RENO, Nev. — A shooting incident outside a popular casino in Reno has resulted in the death of a suspected gunman after he was hospitalized in critical condition. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Dakota Hawver, was involved in a shooting that left three individuals dead outside the Grand Sierra Resort, one of the city’s most prominent entertainment venues.
Authorities announced Thursday that Hawver passed away overnight. His hospitalization followed an altercation that erupted early Monday morning, which witnesses described as chaotic and sudden. Two of the deceased victims were from Southern California and were attending a bachelor party, while the third was a local resident, aged 66.
The Sparks Police Department, which is leading the investigation, has stated that there appears to be no connection between the suspect and the victims or the casino itself. The motive behind the violence remains unclear as authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the tragic shooting.
In addition to the fatalities, two other individuals were injured in the incident but are anticipated to make a full recovery, according to police reports. The victims, Justin Aguila and Andrew Canepa, both 33, were fatally shot while waiting in the valet area for their ride to the airport. Local resident Angel Martinez was killed in his vehicle as he passed through the parking lot.
Investigators revealed that the suspect discharged approximately 80 rounds from a legally owned 9mm handgun. With no prior criminal record or reported mental health issues documented, Hawver’s actions have raised further questions among investigators.
Eyewitness accounts describe how the shooting began when Hawver approached the valet area and brandished his weapon. Despite an initial malfunction with the firearm, he quickly resumed firing before fleeing the scene. An armed security guard on site confronted the suspect, leading to an exchange of gunfire as Hawver attempted to escape.
