PINSON, Ala. — An Alabama family is bracing for a heartbreaking farewell as their 18-year-old daughter, Kimber Mills, faces declaration of brain death following a tragic shooting incident during a bonfire early Sunday. The event turned chaotic when an altercation broke out, and Mills was unintentionally caught in the crossfire, according to her family.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene in Pinson, where they discovered that three others, including two men aged 18 and 21, and a 20-year-old woman, were also hurt during the shooting. All injured parties were treated in hospitals and remain alive, but Kimber was reported to be in critical condition before being declared brain dead.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office arrested 27-year-old Steven Tyler Whitehead on murder charges linked to the shooting incident. As of Tuesday afternoon, he had not entered a plea, and it remains unclear whether he has legal representation.
Family members revealed that doctors have informed them that Kimber has only days to live. Her sister, Ashley Mills, explained that medical professionals have determined no possible intervention could restore her life. The family has decided to honor Kimber’s wishes by transitioning to organ donation, hoping to provide new life to others.
“We’ve opted to let her body do what it needs to do,” Ashley said, emphasizing their decision to have a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order in place to prevent any additional suffering for Kimber.
An “Honor Walk” has been arranged to celebrate Kimber’s life before the organ donation procedure. Her cousin shared on social media that the walk is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, followed by surgery meant to facilitate donation.
Kimber, a senior cheerleader and track athlete, aspired to become a nurse. Her family described her as spirited and dedicated, fondly remembering her enthusiasm and determination.
In light of this tragedy, a GoFundMe page has been established to support the Mills family during this challenging time, highlighting the community’s outpouring of support as they navigate the emotional turmoil of impending loss.
As the family prepares for this painful moment, they also cherish the hope that Kimber’s final act will bring life to others in need.
