Washington, D.C. — A man has been charged with federal firearms offenses related to an ambush that resulted in the death of a National Guard member and serious injuries to another near the White House on November 26. Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, faces multiple counts, including transporting a firearm across state lines with the intention to commit a serious offense.
The accusation stems from an attack that claimed the life of Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and left Andrew Wolfe, 24, seriously injured. Lakanwal is also charged with transporting a stolen firearm between states. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro expressed the gravity of the situation, noting that the transfer of the case from Superior Court to District Court will allow for a thorough examination of whether the death penalty is appropriate given the circumstances.
Lakanwal remains charged with first-degree murder, assault with intent to kill, and illegal firearm possession under D.C. law, to which he has pleaded not guilty. It is important to note that the death penalty is not applicable in D.C. Superior Court.
Both Beckstrom and Wolfe were deployed as part of a law enforcement surge initiated by former President Donald Trump, designed to secure the nation’s capital. Reports indicate that Lakanwal allegedly drove from Bellingham, Washington, to D.C., armed with a stolen weapon, where he ambushed the Guardsmen outside a subway station situated just a few blocks from the White House.
Born in Afghanistan, Lakanwal worked alongside U.S. forces, including the CIA, during his time in Kandahar. He entered the United States in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, a program created to assist Afghans following the U.S. military withdrawal.
The incident has raised serious concerns about security and the well-being of deployed service members in urban environments. As investigations continue, the community grapples with the implications of this tragic event. The families affected are enduring a particularly painful holiday season, mourning their loved ones and dealing with the repercussions of violence.
Lakanwal’s attorney has yet to provide a comment regarding the ongoing case. As the legal process unfolds, many will be watching closely to see how authorities respond to this heinous act and what measures may be taken to prevent future incidents.
