Minneapolis, Minn. — A wave of violence swept through south Minneapolis this week, culminating in the deaths of four individuals during a late-night shooting on Tuesday, with authorities suspecting gang involvement. The aftermath included a second shooting the following day that may be linked to the initial attack, raising concerns of escalating reprisals within the community.
The Minneapolis Police Department responded to alerts from ShotSpotter technology just before midnight in an alley near Bloomington Avenue South and East 25th Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered five victims at the scene. Police Chief Brian O’Hara reported that three of those victims—a teenager, a man, and a woman—were pronounced dead at the location. Two others, also a man and a woman, were transported to a local hospital, with one sustaining life-threatening injuries.
“This incident has a significant likelihood of being targeted and potentially related to gang activity,” O’Hara stated, emphasizing the severity of the situation. Roughly an hour after the initial shooting, gunfire erupted five blocks away, but police found no victims there. Evidence of gunfire was present, and shortly after, a person with gunshot wounds was dropped off at a nearby hospital.
While authorities continue to investigate, it remains uncertain if the second shootout was directly connected to the first. However, O’Hara noted that it “potentially is,” indicating a troubling trend in the area.
As of Wednesday afternoon, no arrests had been made in connection with either shooting. A planned news briefing with Chief O’Hara scheduled for 1:30 p.m. that day had to be postponed due to another unfolding violent incident. Just blocks away from the venue, officers responded to a fatal shooting in the 2100 block of Cedar Avenue South, where a man in his 30s was pronounced dead at the scene. O’Hara reported that a stray bullet had penetrated a nearby vehicle, narrowly avoiding two children.
Mayor Jacob Frey addressed the community’s fears, indicating that reports hinted at a retaliatory motive stemming from Tuesday’s violence. “Community members are expressing concern that what occurred last night could lead to more incidents today,” he said, emphasizing the need for vigilance.
The recent spate of violence has provoked anxiety among residents in the area, underscoring broader issues related to gang activity and public safety. Law enforcement continues to urge anyone with information about the shootings to step forward, as they engage in ongoing efforts to curb the violence and reclaim a sense of security within the community.
