COLUMBIA, Mo. — A shooting incident in Warrensburg has left one man dead and has prompted an ongoing investigation by local authorities. The tragedy unfolded Wednesday morning and is linked to a domestic disturbance.
Authorities from Whiteman Air Force Base confirmed on social media that the 509th Bomb Wing is aware of the situation involving one of its airmen who was off-duty and not on base at the time. The base extended its cooperation to law enforcement but noted that no further details would be available while investigations proceed.
Warrensburg Police reported receiving multiple calls at 7:20 a.m. alerting them to a domestic disturbance on Cedar Drive. Officers were informed that the suspect was armed and was fleeing toward Hale Lake Road, where he reportedly fired at responding officers.
In an unfortunate turn of events, a bystander, identified as Tony Barron, attempted to intervene but was shot by the suspect during the altercation. Tragically, Barron did not survive the encounter.
Later, at 8:36 a.m., law enforcement located the primary suspect deceased in a nearby wooded area from what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Fortunately, no first responders were injured during the incident, and officers did not return fire at the suspect. The female victim involved in the domestic situation received medical attention and has since been released.
The investigation is still underway, and authorities have withheld the identity of the suspect to allow time for family notification, adhering to military regulations. Warrensburg Superintendent Steve Ritter communicated with parents, informing them of the gunfire in the vicinity of the schools. Warrensburg High School was placed on a full lockdown, while other nearby buildings implemented limited lockdown measures.
Ritter also mentioned that Maple Grove Elementary was designated as an area of concern as law enforcement continued their response. Buses transporting students from Maple Grove were temporarily rerouted to ensure safety, but the students have since returned to their school.
As the situation unfolded, an alert was disseminated to students at the University of Central Missouri, informing them that the active shooter situation had been contained and that there was no longer a threat.
Meanwhile, Johnson County Emergency Management reported various street closures, which have since been lifted as the situation stabilized. Local law enforcement agencies, including the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol, worked collaboratively during the incident.
As investigations continue, community leaders and officials emphasize the importance of maintaining safety protocols in schools and public spaces.
