NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. — A shooting incident on Thursday morning left one man dead and another injured at a four-unit apartment complex on Edgewood Drive, off U.S. 27. The deceased has been identified as 31-year-old James Milton.
According to local authorities, the tragedy unfolded following a night of arguments between Milton and his girlfriend. His mother arrived at the apartment complex to pick him up early Thursday. As Milton was preparing to leave, he noticed his girlfriend entering another unit where a male resident lives with his wife. Witnesses reported that Milton attempted to forcibly enter the apartment by kicking the door.
In defense, the resident, armed with a handgun, discharged his weapon, striking both Milton and his mother. Authorities confirmed that Milton’s mother was accidentally wounded in the process. Milton was transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. His mother received treatment at the same facility and has since been released.
The individual who fired the shots remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. Investigators indicated that evidence supports the assertion that Milton was trying to enter the residence unlawfully, raising questions about the legality of the shooter’s actions.
As the investigation progresses, law enforcement has not filed any charges against the shooter. The case remains under active review, and authorities are collaborating with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office to assess whether any charges will be pursued against the resident.
The incident has sparked discussions within the community about gun safety and the implications of confrontations escalating into violence. As investigators continue to gather facts, residents are urged to provide any information that might assist the ongoing inquiry. The details surrounding the shooting underscore the complexities of self-defense claims in tumultuous situations.
