Shooting: Community in Mourning After Tragic Loss of 10-Year-Old and Adult, Authorities Urge Gunman to Surrender

Newark, New Jersey, is in mourning following a tragic shooting that left two individuals dead, including a 10-year-old boy. The incident has galvanized city officials, law enforcement, and the community to demand justice and urge the perpetrators to come forward.

Authorities confirmed that Kiya Maye Scott, 21, and Jordan Garcia succumbed to their injuries at University Hospital after the shooting on Saturday night. A total of five people were affected, with Jordan’s 11-year-old brother and a 60-year-old man currently listed as stable, while a 19-year-old man remains in critical condition.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office reported that the shooting took place around 7 p.m. at the intersection of Chancellor Avenue and Leslie Street. In response to the violence, a reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka addressed the community during a press conference Monday morning, calling for the shooter to surrender. “Immediate action is necessary,” Baraka remarked, emphasizing the urgency of the situation as the community remains on high alert. “We are insisting that you turn yourselves in; the expectation is clear.”

The mayor further expressed the deep emotional impact of the tragedy, noting that the loss of a child is simply inexcusable. Jordan Garcia, described as a promising young football player, was returning home from a local recreation center when the shooting erupted, possibly caught in the crossfire of a dispute. His football coach, Kenneth Luckey, described the boys as “good kids” and lamented the violence that has interrupted their innocent lives.

Essex County Sheriff Amir D. Jones condemned the shooting, expressing his condolences to the families affected. “What happened was nothing short of brutal and senseless,” he said, highlighting the devastation that such violence inflicts on families and the broader community. Jones urged the shooter, declaring that the law enforcement authorities would soon be in pursuit, emphasizing that there would be no place to hide.

In an additional note of concern, the mayor pointed to the sadness that enveloped the city, mentioning a separate incident earlier the same day where a toddler tragically fell to their death. The dual tragedies have left the community reeling and searching for healing amid sorrow.

Governor Phil Murphy also shared his concern, calling for prayers for the victims and their families. Local authorities are actively seeking assistance from the public, urging anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward. Community members are encouraged to reach out to the prosecutor’s office with any tips that could aid in capturing those responsible for this grievous act of violence.

Newark is facing a collective struggle for healing, especially for the families who are enduring unimaginable grief in the wake of this catastrophe. The atmosphere in the city remains charged, with officials and residents alike hoping for swift justice and a stop to the cycle of violence that has plagued their community.
