Greenbelt, Maryland – In a terrifying incident, five teenagers were injured after gunfire erupted at a large gathering of high school students participating in a senior skip day in Maryland, according to authorities. The chaotic situation unfolded in Schrom Hills Park in Greenbelt, as officers from various law enforcement agencies responded to control a crowd of 500 to 600 students.
Greenbelt Police Chief Richard Bowers reported that multiple shots were heard as officers tried to manage the large group of students on Friday afternoon. The victims, all young males between 16 and 18 years old, were found with gunshot wounds and subsequently taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Three of the victims have been discharged from the hospital, with one victim initially listed in critical condition now considered stable, the Greenbelt Police stated on Saturday. Meanwhile, the suspected shooter is believed to have fled the area following the gunfire, as investigators continue their search for the individual responsible.
Describing the incident as a “horrible, tragic, senseless act,” Chief Bowers expressed frustration at the violence that marred what was supposed to be a day of fun for the students. The gathering, initially organized in Bowie, Maryland, for senior skip day, eventually moved to Schrom Hills Park where students engaged in a water gun fight before the shooting occurred.
Greenbelt Mayor Emmett Jordan noted that the gathering was informally planned on social media and emphasized the lack of school endorsement for skipping classes. Despite the tragedy, students from various high schools in the region are believed to have been present at the park during the incident.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are urging anyone with relevant footage of the shooting to come forward. Body-worn camera footage will also be closely reviewed by investigators in hopes of identifying and apprehending the perpetrator. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, leaving both law enforcement and the community on edge as they seek answers in the wake of this alarming event.
