Shooting: 18-Year-Old Rafael Mercado, Jr. Identified as Victim in York City Tragedy; 17-Year-Old Arrested as Shooter

YORK, Pa. — A tragic shooting early Monday morning left an 18-year-old dead and a community in shock. Rafael Mercado, Jr. was fatally injured during an incident that took place around 12:15 a.m. in the 600 block of West College Avenue, according to the local coroner’s office.

Authorities discovered Mercado at the scene, where he succumbed to a gunshot wound. Following an immediate inquiry, it became clear that the suspect and victim were acquainted, prompting law enforcement to act swiftly. Shortly after the shooting, police apprehended 17-year-old Jaiden Lagares, also from York.

Investigators executed a search warrant at Lagares’ home, uncovering a firearm and additional ammunition. The evidence found at the residence supports allegations made against him. Lagares was subsequently charged as an adult and is currently being held at York County Prison.
