Louisville, Kentucky – Heavy rainfall and rising creeks have led to the deaths of at least 10 individuals across the United States in the recent severe weather conditions. In Kentucky, nine people lost their lives due to the flooding, prompting Governor Andy Beshear to declare a state of disaster on Sunday. Hundreds of people have been rescued from the floods, with the Federal Emergency Management Agency coordinating relief efforts in the state.
Most of the fatalities in Kentucky, including a mother and child, were attributed to vehicles getting trapped in high waters. Governor Beshear emphasized the importance of staying off the roads during this critical search and rescue phase. Over 1,000 people have been rescued in Kentucky since the storms began, with power outages affecting approximately 39,000 homes.
The southern states of Kentucky and Tennessee experienced up to 6 inches of rainfall, leading to swollen streams and widespread flooding. In Alabama, an EF-1 tornado struck Hale County with no reported injuries. Similarly, a levee failure in Tennessee’s Obion County resulted in mandatory evacuations in Rives, endangering approximately 300 residents.
In Atlanta, a fatality occurred when a large tree fell on a home, while dangerously cold wind chill temperatures plummeted in North Dakota and other northern states. Across the Eastern Seaboard, power outages were reported from New York to Georgia. In West Virginia, southern counties faced a state of emergency due to flooding, with volunteer fire departments grappling with their own facilities being inundated while responding to emergencies.
Further across the country, parts of Michigan, Colorado, and other states contended with hazardous road conditions caused by ice and snow. A polar vortex event was anticipated to bring frigid temperatures to the northern Rockies and northern Plains. The National Weather Service issued warnings of life-threatening cold in various regions, with avalanche alerts surging in the Rocky Mountains.
While numerous regions across the U.S. grappled with the aftermath of severe weather conditions, the authorities underscored the need for caution and preparedness in the face of unpredictable weather patterns. Expert meteorologists emphasized the rare occurrence of this polar vortex event and its potential impact on vulnerable regions. Additional assistance and resources were mobilized to aid affected communities in their recovery efforts.
