Sea Turtle Meat Poisoning Tragedy Strikes Zanzibar Island, Kills 8 Children: Authorities

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania – The consumption of sea turtle meat has resulted in the deaths of several individuals and the hospitalization of dozens on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago. Eight children and one adult have tragically lost their lives, with 78 others requiring medical attention. Sea turtle meat is considered a delicacy among the people of Zanzibar, however, the recent outbreak of chelonitoxism, a type of food poisoning, has led to these devastating consequences.

According to Dr. Haji Bakari, the medical officer of the Mkoani District, the adult who passed away was the mother of one of the deceased children, and the turtle meat was consumed on Tuesday. Laboratory tests have confirmed that all victims had indeed ingested sea turtle meat. In light of this tragic event, authorities in Zanzibar have dispatched a disaster management team led by Hamza Hassan Juma, who is urging individuals to refrain from consuming sea turtles.

This is not the first instance of such unfortunate incidents occurring on Pemba Island. In November 2021, seven individuals, including a 3-year-old child, lost their lives after consuming turtle meat, while three others required hospitalization. The recurring pattern of deaths and sicknesses related to sea turtle consumption highlights the dangers associated with consuming these animals, which are deemed a traditional delicacy in the region.

The recent spike in fatalities and illnesses has prompted calls for increased awareness and education regarding the potential risks of consuming sea turtle meat. Efforts to prevent future incidents and protect public health are underway as authorities work to address the root causes of these food poisoning outbreaks. As investigations continue and more information is gathered, it is crucial for community members to prioritize food safety practices and avoid the consumption of sea turtles to prevent further tragedies.
