Sea Turtle Meat Causes Fatal Illness in Zanzibar Village

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania – A tragedy unfolded on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago as several individuals fell ill or lost their lives after consuming sea turtle meat, a local delicacy. Eight children and one adult passed away, while 78 others were hospitalized due to what authorities suspect to be chelonitoxism, a form of food poisoning.

The devastating incident occurred following the consumption of sea turtle meat by the victims, leading to a series of hospitalizations and fatalities. The adult victim who succumbed late Friday was identified as the parent of one of the deceased children. Local medical officer Dr. Haji Bakari confirmed that the turtle meat was ingested on a Tuesday.

Zanzibar’s community has a cultural appreciation for sea turtle meat, considering it a delicacy with historical significance. However, the recent outbreak of illnesses and fatalities has prompted authorities to issue warnings against its consumption. This isn’t the first time such a tragedy has struck Pemba Island, as a similar incident in November 2021 claimed seven lives, including that of a 3-year-old child.

Laboratory tests conducted by officials have confirmed that all victims had indeed consumed sea turtle meat, shedding light on the source of the widespread illness. Disaster management teams have been deployed to the region, emphasizing the dangers associated with consuming certain types of wildlife.

Efforts to raise awareness about the risks of consuming sea turtle meat continue, as authorities strive to prevent further tragedies from occurring. The community remains in mourning over the loss of lives and the impact of the recent outbreak, drawing attention to the need for increased vigilance when it comes to traditional culinary practices.
