Safety Warning Issued for Lake Mead National Recreation Area Following Weekend Fatalities

BOULDER CITY, NEVADA – Authorities at Lake Mead National Recreation Area are emphasizing the importance of safety following a tragic weekend that saw multiple fatalities and accidents.

Lake Mead, nestled between Nevada and Arizona, attracts millions of visitors annually who come to partake in a variety of recreational activities such as boating, hiking, camping, fishing, swimming, and cycling.

Unfortunately, the recent Father’s Day weekend was marred by six deaths within the park. Three individuals lost their lives in a multi-car accident, two people drowned, and one person tragically succumbed to suicide.

In response to these incidents, the National Parks Service is urging visitors to exercise caution while enjoying the park’s amenities. Park rangers were also involved in the rescue of 23 individuals over the weekend, addressing situations ranging from criminal activities like assault and theft to unsafe behavior within the park.

Acting Superintendent Mike Gauthier stressed the importance of safety and responsible behavior in a statement, noting that while water levels are high and visitation is strong, tragic events serve as a reminder to prioritize the well-being of oneself and others while at the park.

Officials at the park have issued reminders to visitors to comply with safety protocols, including adhering to speed limits and wearing life jackets while engaging in water activities.

To enhance the safety and enjoyment of all visitors, it is essential for park guests to familiarize themselves with park rules, abide by posted restrictions, avoid risky behaviors, and show respect towards fellow visitors.

Additionally, anyone witnessing concerning or criminal behavior is encouraged to report it by calling the park’s dispatch line at 702-293-8932. By promoting responsible recreation practices, visitors can contribute to creating a positive and safe environment for everyone to enjoy their time at the lake.
