DALLAS, Texas — A 34-year-old robbery suspect was hospitalized Thursday after authorities said he fired at Richardson police officers during a pursuit that crossed several North Texas cities and ended with another exchange of gunfire in Dallas.
Richardson police identified the man as Ryan Edward Drouin. Police said he was struck when multiple Richardson officers returned fire after he exited a disabled vehicle near Alpha Road and Hughes Lane and allegedly shot at them. Dallas Fire-Rescue took Drouin to a hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. No officers were injured.
The confrontation followed an aggravated robbery reported at about 11:23 p.m. Wednesday in The Colony. Police said a man displayed a handgun and demanded money from a group of people who were waiting for a food order at a restaurant. The man then left in a black Jeep, according to investigators.
Surveillance footage from the area helped officers identify the Jeep’s license plate, The Colony police said. The plate was entered into an automated license plate reader system, which later detected the vehicle traveling toward Plano. Authorities also received information connecting the Jeep to an earlier, separate incident in Carrollton, but details of that incident were not immediately released.
Police tracked the Jeep to a home in Plano associated with Drouin’s father, according to reports based on statements from the departments involved. Officers tried to contact Drouin, but police said he drove away, starting a pursuit that was later called off.
At about 2:12 a.m. Thursday, Plano police notified Richardson patrol officers that they had lost sight of the Jeep after it entered Richardson near Custer Road and West Renner Road. Richardson officers later found the vehicle and attempted to stop it, but the driver did not pull over, police said.
The second pursuit continued south through Richardson and into Dallas. Richardson police said Drouin fired a handgun at pursuing officers while he was driving. Officers returned fire as the chase continued, according to the department’s account.
The Jeep eventually became disabled and stopped near Alpha Road and Hughes Lane. Richardson police said officers ordered Drouin to leave the vehicle with his hands raised. Police allege that he fired at officers after getting out, prompting several officers to shoot back. Officers then removed him from the vehicle and began providing first aid.
Dallas police are leading the criminal investigation because the final shooting happened within Dallas city limits. The Dallas County district attorney’s office is conducting a separate investigation, Richardson police said. The Richardson officers who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave under department policy while an internal review is completed.
The Colony police are continuing to investigate the reported robbery. Authorities had not announced what charges Drouin may face as of Friday, and no court filings related to the incident had been made public. Neither Plano nor Dallas police officers fired their weapons during the confrontation, according to Richardson police.
