SAN ANTONIO, Texas — San Antonio police are investigating an off-duty officer’s shooting of a 50-year-old man after an alleged road-rage confrontation, with authorities yet to disclose several details that could shape the review of what happened.
The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. Saturday near Northeast Loop 410 and Airport Boulevard. Police said the off-duty officer reported that another driver had been driving aggressively and chasing him before crossing several traffic lanes, striking another vehicle and pulling alongside the officer’s stopped vehicle.
The officer told investigators he believed the other driver was about to pull out a firearm, according to police. The officer retrieved a weapon and fired at the man’s vehicle. The wounded driver then left the scene, while the officer called police and remained there until responding officers arrived.
Authorities have not said whether a firearm was recovered from the 50-year-old man or from his vehicle. Police also have not released the officer’s name, the wounded man’s name or an independent account from the other driver describing what happened before the shots were fired.
The man was later found at a residence after emergency crews were called about a person with a gunshot wound. Police said he had been shot in the upper body. He was taken to a hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening.
Police have also not announced any arrest or criminal charge in the case. The department’s public account identifies the officer’s belief that the man might be drawing a gun as a key part of the confrontation, but investigators have not announced a final finding about the use of force or the events that preceded it.
Another unresolved issue is the officer’s employment status following the shooting. As of the latest public reporting, it was not clear whether the officer had been placed on administrative duty, leave or another status while the investigation proceeds. The department has not publicly announced disciplinary action connected with the case.
The investigation may also have to establish the full sequence of the reported driving confrontation. Police said the 50-year-old man crossed multiple lanes and struck another vehicle before approaching the officer’s stopped vehicle. Authorities have not released further information about that collision, including who occupied the other vehicle or whether anyone reported injuries.
Because the officer was off duty, the shooting differs from an encounter that begins with an officer responding to a police call or attempting an arrest. Police have not released additional information about what role, if any, the officer’s law-enforcement status played before or during the confrontation.
The available police account does not establish what started the dispute or how long the alleged chase lasted. Authorities also have not released video, witness accounts or other evidence that would independently clarify the movements of the two vehicles immediately before the gunfire.
