RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – Rex Heuermann, the alleged serial killer accused of killing three women, is set to appear in court on Long Island next week, where new charges are expected to be announced in the death of a fourth woman. Sources have revealed to ABC News that Heuermann is likely to be charged in connection with the discovery of a woman’s remains near Gilgo Beach.
Heuermann, 60, is already facing charges for the murders of three women whose bodies were found wrapped in burlap in close proximity. Prosecutors have identified him as the prime suspect in the death of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes. He has pleaded not guilty to the killings of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, and Amber Costello, and is currently being held without bail.
During the upcoming court hearing in Riverhead, prosecutors are expected to announce the return of an indictment by a grand jury, adding a fourth murder charge to Heuermann’s case. The new charge is linked to the death of Brainard-Barnes, whose body was found wrapped with a belt bearing the initials WH, believed to stand for Heuermann’s father.
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, which is handling the prosecution of Heuermann, has not provided any immediate comment on the case. Investigators have identified Heuermann, an architect, as the perpetrator through DNA evidence, connecting him to the women – all sex workers – including a DNA sample from a pizza crust found in the trash outside his Manhattan office.
In addition to the four victims associated with Heuermann, there are six other unsolved murders linked to the Gilgo Beach area. The case has garnered significant attention and continues to be a focus of law enforcement efforts.
