GREENWOOD, Ind. — The journey of resilience often features stories that inspire communities, reminding them of the strength found in overcoming adversity. James Clingerman, a figure in the Brazilian jiu-jitsu community and the owner of the Indiana Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, exemplifies such resilience following a life-altering incident.
Clingerman, a former national champion, was just 20 years old when his aspirations were halted by an act of violence. The fateful moment came in 2000 at a stoplight, where he was confronted by a man armed with a 9mm handgun. The encounter ended with a bullet striking his left cheek, an injury that left him with permanent scars, almost complete blindness in one eye, and occasional hearing difficulties.
The man responsible for the shooting, Jay Messer, was sentenced to 54 years in prison but served less than half of that time before his release in 2025. Just a year after his early release, Messer was arrested again for threatening another individual with a firearm. Clingerman expressed frustration at the leniency of the justice system, stating that often, individuals like Messer receive minimal consequences for their actions, only to reoffend shortly after their release.
Despite the profound challenges he faced after the shooting, Clingerman turned to Brazilian jiu-jitsu as a means of coping with the emotional turmoil. He describes the sport as a form of high-speed problem-solving that mirrors life’s challenges. For him, jiu-jitsu injuries and pressure are metaphors for the struggles everyone faces. “It’s about navigating through difficult circumstances and emerging on the other side,” he said.
His journey through pain and recovery has not only been about personal healing. Clingerman is committed to giving back to his community, using his experience to mentor others. He believes that the lessons learned on the mat apply broadly to life, where perseverance is key to overcoming hardships. “Life can be challenging, but I truly believe there are solutions to every problem,” he added.
Clingerman’s dedication to the sport extends beyond his own experiences. He actively works to foster a supportive environment at his academy, encouraging others to find their strength in jiu-jitsu. Through classes and community outreach, he aims to instill a sense of resilience in his students, teaching them that challenges can be surmountable with determination and support.
As Clingerman continues to inspire those around him, he serves as a reminder of the power of resilience and the importance of turning personal tragedy into a force for good. His story emphasizes that through adversity, individuals can find not only healing but also a renewed purpose that extends to their communities.
