WEST, Texas – In a tribute to the resilience and strength of the community of West, Texas, a park and memorial stand as enduring symbols of remembrance and healing. The town was forever changed eleven years ago by a devastating fertilizer fire that claimed lives and devastated homes.
On April 17, 2013, a tragic fire engulfed West, resulting in the loss of five firefighters and numerous citizens who bravely fought to contain the explosion. Among those who perished was firefighter Joey Pustejovsky. His son, Parker Pustejovsky, at just four years old, came up with the idea to transform a local park into a tribute to his father’s legacy.
Through a dedicated community effort spearheaded by Parker and a committee, over $200,000 was raised by selling hot dogs. This funding was instrumental in the creation of Parker’s Park, a beloved playground that serves as a cherished spot in West today.
Fifteen-year-old Parker Pustejovsky continues to be a guardian of the park and memorial, ensuring they remain in good condition. His dedication to preserving the space reflects the deep meaning it holds for the community.
Adjacent to Parker’s Park is a solemn memorial adorned with photographs and stories honoring the fallen heroes of the tragic event. This memorial serves as a place for community members to pay their respects and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting their town.
Joe Pustejovsky, Parker’s grandfather, expressed gratitude for the addition of Parker’s Park to the community, highlighting how it continues to be respected and preserved by the residents of West.
