Middletown, Connecticut – Workers, family members, and elected officials gather to honor the lives of six workers who tragically died in an explosion at the Kleen Energy plant in 2010. The Connecticut AFL-CIO Health & Safety Committee announced that a memorial service will take place on Sunday, February 4th at 11 a.m. at the permanent memorial outside the plant.
The explosion at the Kleen Energy power plant resulted in the initial death of five workers, with dozens more suffering injuries. Tragically, one additional worker succumbed to his injuries at a later time. The families of the deceased workers are expected to attend the memorial service to honor and remember their loved ones who tragically lost their lives in the incident.
The gathering will feature several speakers, including Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Middletown Mayor Ben Florsheim, Middletown South Fire District Chief James Trzaski, and Connecticut AFL-CIO President Ed Hawthorne. The union has stated that the memorial service will be a celebration of the lives of those who were lost, with family members and fellow union members sharing stories about the six deceased workers.
Located at 1349 River Road, Middletown, the Kleen Energy memorial event is organized by retired UA Local 777 member Paul Venti and the Connecticut AFL-CIO Health & Safety Committee.
