Prison Sentence Handed to Repeat Felon for Brutal Domestic Assault in New Bern

NEW BERN, N.C. — A 50-year-old man is facing a lengthy prison sentence after pleading guilty to charges related to a violent domestic assault earlier this year. Edwaun Gibbs has a history of criminal behavior that ultimately contributed to a more severe penalty.

Gibbs pleaded guilty to assault inflicting serious bodily injury and breaking or entering with the intent to terrorize or injure. A judge sentenced him to between 12 and 15 and a half years in prison, a ruling reflecting both the violent nature of the crime and his previous felony record.

In April 2024, police in New Bern responded to reports of a domestic assault involving Gibbs. Investigators described the victim’s injuries as substantial, including a deep laceration above her left eye, extensive bruising and swelling around the eyes, and additional injuries to her nose, jaw, and arms. Her condition highlighted the seriousness of the incident, prompting a swift investigation.

After the assault, the victim managed to escape and, with support from her family, promptly reported the incident to law enforcement. This decision proved crucial in facilitating a timely and thorough investigation.

A month later, Gibbs was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Task Force in Onslow County. His criminal history includes multiple prior felony convictions, such as possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, as well as felonies for breaking and entering with intent to inflict harm. These offenses established his status as a habitual felon, which significantly impacted his sentencing.

Craven County District Attorney Matt Wareham praised the victim and her family for their courage in coming forward. “This long prison sentence was only possible because the victim and her family members came forward and did the right thing to report this serious and violent crime to law enforcement,” he stated in a recent announcement.

This case not only underscores the persistence of repeat offenders but also illuminates the crucial role that victim advocacy and cooperation with law enforcement can play in achieving justice. As Gibbs begins his prison term, the severity of this case may serve as a warning to others engaged in similar violent behavior.
