Priest, Sister, and Grandfather Murders: Police Investigate Motive of Palm Bay Shootout

PALM BAY, Fla. — Authorities in Palm Bay are investigating the tragic murders of a grandfather, a Catholic priest, and the priest’s sister. The suspect, 24-year-old Brandon Kapas, was killed during a confrontation with law enforcement over the weekend.

Neighbors were shocked by the violence that unfolded, as investigators combed through the neighborhood to collect evidence. The motive behind the killings remains unknown, leaving the community reeling from the senseless tragedy.

Father Robert Hoeffner, 76, and Sally Hoeffner, 69, were found dead in their home on Kamloops Street, victims of the shooting allegedly carried out by Kapas. The Hoeffners were well-regarded members of the community, known for their involvement in bible study and their friendly demeanor.

The violent incident began with a call about a domestic disturbance during a birthday party at a home on Forgal Avenue. When officers arrived to confront Kapas, he refused to comply and opened fire, injuring two officers in the process. Kapas then allegedly went on to fatally shoot his own grandfather, 78-year-old William Kapas Sr., who had been visiting from out of state.

Following a manhunt, law enforcement located and fatally shot Kapas. Inside his vehicle, authorities discovered several weapons, adding to the tragic and disturbing nature of the events.

Father Hoeffner’s dedication to the church and his 50th anniversary in the priesthood were highlighted by the Florida Tech Catholic Campus Ministry, underscoring the profound loss experienced by the community. The shock and grief over the deaths of the Hoeffners and the violence that engulfed the neighborhood serve as a somber reminder of the impact of senseless acts of violence on a tight-knit community.
