Domunique Kindred had recently finished cosmetology school and was preparing to welcome her third child before the fatal crash.
LITHONIA, Ga. — The family of a 28-year-old pregnant mother who died after an ATV crash is urging other riders to wear helmets as they mourn her and her unborn child.
Domunique Kindred was not wearing a helmet when she took an all-terrain vehicle for a short ride on her street in Lithonia, relatives told FOX 5 Atlanta. Her family said she swerved to avoid an approaching car, struck a mailbox and a parked vehicle, and was thrown unconscious when the ATV overturned.
Kindred later died at a hospital. Her unborn child also died. Authorities had not released the exact date or time of the crash as of Saturday, and several questions about the approaching vehicle remained unanswered.
Kindred’s relatives said the loss came during a time of major changes in her life. She had recently graduated from cosmetology school, learned she was expecting her third child and had been preparing to marry. She also was raising a 4-month-old son and a 5-year-old son.
Her sister, Alexis Kindred, described her as someone who brought humor into difficult moments. She said the family believes a helmet might have changed the outcome of the crash and wants other families to understand the potential consequences of riding without one.
Kindred’s father, Ralph Kindred, said he had planned to bring helmets to his daughter before the crash. He said riders using ATVs, scooters or similar vehicles should protect their heads every time they ride, even when traveling only a short distance.
The family’s warning focuses on one known factor in the crash, but an official investigation has not established whether a helmet would have prevented Kindred’s death. Authorities also have not released detailed medical findings or a final account of how the ATV overturned.
Georgia highway-safety records show that ATV crashes represent a small portion of the state’s traffic deaths. The number alone does not reflect the seriousness of individual crashes, which can involve rollovers, ejections and collisions with fixed objects or other vehicles.
The crash investigation remained open Saturday. Authorities had not identified the approaching vehicle, disclosed whether its driver stopped or announced whether any citations or charges were being considered.
Kindred’s family is now arranging memorial support while caring for the two children she left behind. No further official findings about the crash had been released.
