Police: Woman shot in face after midnight fight in apartment

JSO detained a man in his 60s; the victim, in her 30s, was taken to a hospital.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville police are investigating a domestic-related shooting that wounded a woman in the face early Wednesday at an Argyle Forest apartment complex. Officers were called around 12:20 a.m. to the 8500 block of Argyle Business Loop and detained a man at the scene.

Investigators said the fight started inside an apartment between two people who “appear to be in a dating relationship.” During the argument, a shot was fired and struck the woman’s face, according to an early morning briefing. She left the unit and found a security guard, who contacted 911 and guided officers to the location. Rescue crews took the woman to a hospital. Police did not release her condition or name, and they did not identify the detained man pending interviews and possible charges.

The complex, identified by residents as part of the Argyle Business Loop corridor, sits near retail and office space in the Westside’s Argyle Forest neighborhood. Officers arriving after the call closed off a section of the property with crime-scene tape while detectives collected evidence and looked for bullet impact points inside the unit. Supervisors said canvassing teams knocked on doors before dawn to find witnesses and check for doorbell or exterior cameras that may have captured the moment the woman ran for help or the suspect came outside.

Police said they were still working to determine what prompted the argument and whether any prior disturbances were reported at the same apartment. The number of shots fired remained unclear by midday, though detectives said they recovered ballistic evidence consistent with a single round. The man detained, described as being in his 60s, was taken to a substation for questioning. The Sheriff’s Office said it would consult the State Attorney’s Office on potential charges once interviews and hospital updates are complete. No arrest report had been issued by early afternoon.

Neighbors described being awakened by sirens and flashlight beams through their blinds as officers moved from unit to unit. A maintenance worker said he saw detectives carry paper evidence bags and a camera tripod into a second-floor apartment. A private security guard remained near the gate hours after the shooting, speaking with supervisors. “It was quiet until all the lights showed up,” one resident said, declining to be named because the investigation is open. The building’s breezeways were cleared as evidence technicians finished documenting the scene.

By late morning Wednesday, JSO said the woman remained hospitalized and that detectives were processing interviews and physical evidence. An updated incident summary is expected after initial findings are reviewed with prosecutors, potentially by the end of the week.
