Police Tasering Incident Ends in Hospitalizations and Arrests After Brothers Assault Officers in Green Island

Green Island, New Zealand – A violent altercation with police in Green Island led to two brothers being tasered and three officers hospitalized. Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond from Dunedin reported that the incident began when a vehicle with two occupants stopped short of a checkpoint in Brighton Rd at 3:45 pm yesterday.

The driver, a 33-year-old man, allegedly refused to comply with the drink-driving procedure and became obstructive. Despite attempts to reason with him, the situation escalated when he became physically aggressive towards the police officers. The driver left his vehicle and attacked an officer, hitting him six times on the head.

The driver’s brother then emerged from the car, took off his shirt, and started to attack the officers who were trying to restrain his brother. Both brothers were eventually tasered, and the 24-year-old passenger was charged with aggravated assault, while the driver faced charges of aggravated assault, failing to comply with an officer, and refusing to give blood.

The injured police officers were taken to Dunedin Hospital, with one possibly suffering from concussion and facial cuts, another with head injuries, and the third potentially having a dislocated shoulder. Senior Sergeant Karl Hemmingsen condemned the attack on the officers, emphasizing the volatility and violence of the situation.

“This was a volatile and violent situation, and I’m proud of the officers’ actions. I’m incredibly thankful that their injuries were not more severe,” Hemmingsen stated. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence and the consequences that may follow.
