Police say the victims were found after relatives requested a welfare check.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Derrick Green made his first court appearance Friday after police accused him of killing his wife, Shalimar Green, and her 11-year-old daughter, Aliv’eyah Chandler, inside an east Columbus home.
A Franklin County Municipal Court judge set Green’s bond at $5 million. The case began Wednesday evening when relatives asked for a welfare check at a home in the 2900 block of Chatsworth Way. Police later classified the deaths as a double homicide.
Columbus police said relatives were concerned about Shalimar Green and Aliv’eyah before officers were sent to the home. A relative found the victims before police arrived. Authorities said both were pronounced dead at the scene by medics.
Investigators said the mother and child had been shot and stabbed. In court, prosecutors described evidence collected at the home, including shell casings, a knife covered in blood and bloody clothing. Police said Green fled before officers arrived, then was found and arrested by SWAT officers.
Officials said Shalimar Green had been in a continuing domestic dispute with Derrick Green. Court records show prior allegations involving Green, including a 2023 Whitehall case in which he was accused of domestic violence and strangulation involving Shalimar Green. A grand jury did not indict him in that case.
First Assistant Police Chief LaShanna Potts said police were focused on accountability for the victims’ family. “We will do everything that we can to hold that person accountable,” Potts said.
On Chatsworth Way, a memorial continued to grow with flowers, candles, handwritten notes and stuffed animals. Neighbors and classmates gathered to remember Aliv’eyah, while relatives described the loss as devastating for the family.
Green remains jailed on the murder charges. Police said detectives are continuing to review evidence and ask anyone with information to contact homicide investigators.
