MABLETON, Ga. — Five children who witnessed an alleged knife confrontation between a man and their father are at the center of child-cruelty charges filed after the encounter inside a Cobb County grocery store, where police say the suspect obtained the knife moments before approaching the family.
Pedro Barrera faces one count of aggravated assault and five counts of cruelty to children following the incident at Mableton Supermarket on Mableton Parkway, according to Cobb County police. Authorities said the five child-cruelty counts correspond to the children who were with their parents during the confrontation. Barrera was denied bond.
Police said the incident began while a father, mother and their five children were shopping. Investigators have not publicly established exactly what caused a confrontation between Barrera and the father. Authorities said Barrera became upset, walked away and went to a section of the supermarket where knives were offered for sale.
Investigators said Barrera selected a knife from a shelf and removed it from its packaging. He then returned toward the family while holding the knife and yelling, police said. The reported sequence turned an initial dispute into an alleged armed confrontation and eventually produced six criminal charges.
The five children were not reported injured, but police said their presence and exposure to the encounter were the basis for the cruelty-to-children allegations. Authorities said they saw Barrera approach while armed as he continued the dispute with their father. Police have not released the children’s names, ages or other identifying information.
Investigators relied on video while examining the episode. Separate local reporting said police reviewed supermarket surveillance footage along with video taken by someone in the family. Authorities said the recordings helped document Barrera holding the knife and approaching the group in a manner investigators considered threatening.
The store manager called police, and officers arrived before Barrera had left the supermarket, authorities said. Sgt. Eric Smith, a Cobb County police spokesperson, said officers encountered Barrera while he was still in possession of the knife. Officers determined they had probable cause to take him into custody.
No injuries were reported among the parents, their five children or others at the store. Police have not reported that the confrontation developed into a stabbing or that anyone required medical treatment. Authorities also have not publicly identified a prior connection between Barrera and the family.
The aggravated assault and child-cruelty counts remain allegations. The available reports do not establish Barrera’s guilt, and authorities have not released a full account of the evidence that may be presented in court. The specific reason the original dispute began also remains unclear in the public reporting.
Barrera remained without bond as the case moved into the court process. The next stages of the prosecution are expected to address the allegations arising from both the alleged knife threat and the presence of the five children during the encounter.
