Parking Enforcement Worker Brutally Attacked in Dorchester, City Officials Call for Increased Safety Measures

Boston, MA – A Boston parking enforcement worker is recovering from a brutal attack after issuing a ticket to an illegally parked car in Dorchester. The city and union officials are advocating for better protection for city workers in light of this violent incident on Hartwell Street.

The worker, who was targeted in the attack, was reportedly assaulted by the owner of the illegally parked vehicle, Kenneth Vandergrift, a Dorchester resident. Vandergrift allegedly took the worker’s radio and used it to physically assault him, leaving the worker bloodied and with one of his eyes swollen shut. As a result, Vandergrift is facing multiple charges, including assault on a person over 60.

Despite the shocking nature of the incident, the union representing the workers, AFCSME 93, stated that these workers often face verbal and physical assaults while carrying out their duties. Jim Durkin emphasized the need for a change in the public attitude toward these officers and the mistreatment they endure.

Following the attack, Boston City Councilor Erin Murphy is advocating for a hearing on the issue, pushing for the city to explore potential solutions to enhance the safety of parking enforcement workers. She suggested measures like increased security and having these workers operate in pairs during overnight shifts to ensure their safety.

Durkin welcomed the support from both city officials and the public, highlighting the importance of ensuring the safety of these workers as they perform their essential duties. He plans to meet with the workers prior to the hearing to discuss potential solutions and further advocate for their protection.

Amidst calls for increased security measures, there is a growing emphasis on the need to address the public’s treatment of parking enforcement workers. The city and union officials are collectively working towards fostering a safer environment for these workers and changing the narrative around their roles and responsibilities.
