LANCASTER, Calif. – A tragic case unfolded as a 24-year-old man, Yusuf Dewees, faced charges of murder, assault on a child causing death, and child abuse in Lancaster. The charges stem from the disappearance of his 3-week-old son, Baki, from a Palmdale home in early May. Dewees made his first court appearance where he was ordered to be held on $2 million bail until his arraignment on August 7.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office revealed that Dewees allegedly committed the crimes between May 2 and 3. Despite efforts by detectives to search for the infant’s remains in a landfill in the Antelope Valley, the body has not been found yet. Dewees’ defense attorney shielded him from appearing on camera during the court proceedings.
Family members, including the infant’s grandmother, Fiti Paulo, are struggling to come to terms with the loss of Baki. Paulo expressed her sorrow, saying she wishes she could hold her grandson, now lost to a senseless act of violence. The mother of the infant was reportedly incarcerated in Utah at the time when Dewees allegedly murdered Baki in Palmdale.
State Assemblymember Tom Lackey highlighted the concerning trend of child murders by parents in the Antelope Valley. Lackey emphasized the need for prevention measures to address such tragic incidents in the community. As the case unfolds, loved ones of Baki are left searching for answers, hoping for justice to be served.
Despite the heartbreaking reality of the situation, the community is rallying for awareness and action to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable children and ensuring accountability for those responsible for heinous crimes against them. The legal proceedings in Lancaster shed light on the need for compassion and vigilance in safeguarding the well-being of all children.
