Pakistani Film “Wakhri” Sheds Light on Women’s Struggles in South Asia and Draws Mixed Response

KARACHI, Pakistan – The Pakistani film “Wakhri” draws inspiration from the life of the late social media celebrity Qandeel Baloch, shedding light on the challenges faced by women in Pakistan. The film’s director aims to authentically capture the harsh realities experienced by women in the South Asian country.

“Wakhri” portrays the story of Noor, a widowed schoolteacher, set in rural Pakistan. The film explores the broader struggles of Pakistani women, using Noor’s experience of social media fame as a lens into the societal challenges they face.

The film made its world premiere at the Red Sea International Film Festival and has garnered mixed responses from viewers. Iram Parveen Bilal, the writer, director, and co-producer of “Wakhri,” expressed a personal connection to the issues addressed in the film, citing the impact of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto’s assassination in 2007 on her sentiments.

Qandeel Baloch, known for her bold social media presence, was tragically murdered by her brother in 2016. The film reflects on the societal attitudes towards women who challenge conservative norms, highlighting the struggle for freedom of speech in Pakistan.

Lead actress Faryal Mehmood, who plays the dual role of Noor and Wakhri, emphasized the importance of portraying the truth and honesty of Pakistani society in the film. The project aims to challenge societal norms and perceptions, encouraging dialogue and awareness.

The film has faced criticism and praise, with Bilal admitting to the exhausting experience of dealing with social media trolls. Despite this, she finds it revealing how society labels women who express themselves as “bold.”

The filmmakers have shown “Wakhri” internationally, with plans for further international releases in the works. Mehmood expressed optimism about the film’s impact on Pakistani society, noting the evolving perspectives of women and young girls after watching the film.

With its bold portrayal of societal challenges, “Wakhri” presents a powerful reflection of the struggles faced by women in Pakistan, sparking important conversations about freedom of speech and societal norms.
