Ohio doctor missing for a month found dead in lake

Dr. Cletus Iwuagwu, 71, was recovered from Orchard Lake near the Stone Oak neighborhood in Lucas County.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A 71-year-old physician who disappeared after returning home from a hospital visit in late November was found dead on Dec. 25 in a lake near his subdivision, authorities said, closing a monthlong search that drew drones, K-9 teams and volunteers.

Dr. Cletus Iwuagwu was reported missing on Nov. 25 after he failed to return home to the Stone Oak area just outside Toledo. Investigators say he was last seen around 2:15 a.m. near his residence, shortly after being released from a local hospital. On Christmas Day, members of the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office located a body in Orchard Lake, which borders the Stone Oak Country Club. The Springfield Fire Department pulled the remains from the water. The Lucas County Coroner later identified the body as Iwuagwu and determined he died from drowning. Officials said there were no signs of trauma or foul play. The case remains under investigation as authorities review the timeline of his final movements.

Detectives pieced together Iwuagwu’s path from the evening of Nov. 24 into the early hours of Nov. 25, noting hospital discharge, a brief return toward his neighborhood and a final sighting by surveillance near his home. Family members, including his daughters, raised alarms when his phone showed limited activity and he missed appointments. Searchers canvassed streets, ponds and wooded areas in Springfield Township and surrounding Lucas County. “There were no signs of trauma or foul play,” the coroner’s office said after the autopsy, adding that drowning was the cause of death. Investigators have not disclosed what clothing he wore at the time he entered the water or how long he may have been in the lake. Officials said they are reviewing neighborhood cameras and any vehicle or pedestrian sightings from that night.

Iwuagwu practiced geriatric medicine for decades and was affiliated with the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. Neighbors described him as a fixture in the Stone Oak area who kept a steady routine, often leaving early for rounds and returning in the evening. His disappearance prompted daily checks of nearby retention ponds and golf-course lakes common to the subdivision. Lucas County agencies used drones and K-9 units along tree lines and fairway edges as water temperatures dropped in late November and December. Law enforcement asked property owners to review outdoor camera footage for images of a person on foot in the hours after 2 a.m. on Nov. 25.

Authorities said the formal autopsy is complete and the manner of death is consistent with an accidental drowning, though the exact circumstances remain unclear. No criminal charges are expected. Deputies are compiling a final report that will include the recovery log from Orchard Lake on Dec. 25, the fire department’s retrieval notes and any supplemental video collected from the neighborhood. Officials said any additional findings will be sent to the county prosecutor’s office for routine review. A summary of the investigation is expected to be filed in early January after the holiday period when all lab paperwork and documentation are finalized.

On Stone Oak’s walking paths Monday, a few residents left flowers near the lake’s edge where dive crews worked on Christmas afternoon. “He was always kind,” said a neighbor who gave only her first name, describing brief chats when their morning schedules overlapped. A volunteer who joined weekend searches said the community “kept hoping for good news” as crews rotated through shoreline checks. A local physician who trained with Iwuagwu years ago recalled his calm bedside manner and quiet mentorship for medical students rotating through geriatrics. Family members asked for privacy while they make arrangements.

As of Monday evening, authorities said the investigation remains open for administrative steps but active search operations have ceased. The sheriff’s office plans to release a final case summary once evidence logging is complete in early January.
