NEW YORK, NY – Law enforcement authorities are currently investigating two violent attacks at the Queens Plaza subway station. These incidents follow an uptick in high-profile crimes across the New York City transit system. The first attack involved a 31-year-old man who was repeatedly beaten in the head with a metal pipe. Authorities have released surveillance photos in an effort to apprehend the assailant. The suspect is described as having a dark complexion, medium build, and was last seen wearing a skull cap, grey hooded jacket, dark grey jeans, and tan work boots, believed to be between 40 and 50 years old. The second attack occurred just two days prior to the first incident when a 29-year-old man from Brazil was slashed from behind on the left side of his neck.
Officials are concerned about the increasing rate of crime in the subway system, prompting additional efforts to address the issue. The NYPD has deployed upwards of 1,000 extra officers to the subway system on a daily basis. Despite these efforts, the subway system has seen a notable increase in overall crime, up by 22.6%. Another concerning incident took place in the Bronx, where authorities are searching for a teenager who shot and killed a 35-year-old man at the Mount Eden station. Maurice Stewart, 15, is suspected of firing the deadly shot, which also injured five other people. Meanwhile, a 70-year-old man was pushed to the ground at the Jackson Heights Roosevelt Avenue subway station, and the suspect in this incident remains at large. NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper expressed frustration at the repeated cycle of arresting individuals for crimes in the subway system, only to have them return and commit further offenses.
