New boyfriend killed in Valrico, Man then Sets himself on FIRE

VALRICO, FL – A tragic scene unfolded in a Valrico neighborhood early Tuesday morning, leaving residents shaken after a domestic dispute turned deadly. Authorities responded to an emergency call from a woman reporting that her estranged husband had broken into her home and fatally shot her new boyfriend.

Witnesses in the Arista subdivision described waking up to gunfire and the sight of flames engulfing a vehicle outside the residence. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office received the call shortly before 4 a.m., with the woman pleading for help as her estranged husband threatened her new partner.

The couple’s 12-year-old son, hiding upstairs, also dialed 911, expressing fear as he reported that his father had forcibly entered the house. Deputies arrived to find a vehicle and a man’s body ablaze outside the home, with a firearm nearby. The charred remains are believed to belong to 51-year-old Philip Cordova, the estranged husband. Investigators say Cordova had recently discovered his wife’s new relationship and had been making threats to harm himself and others.

In the days leading up to the incident, Cordova reportedly sent messages to his wife, warning that he would come to her house and set himself on fire. Despite these threats, authorities confirmed that no prior criminal history was on record for Cordova, and the warnings went unreported.

The victim, the woman’s boyfriend, has yet to be publicly identified as officials work to notify his family. Meanwhile, the woman and her son, although physically unharmed, are receiving emotional support from victim advocates.

The neighborhood remains on edge, grappling with the horror of the early morning events. Residents expressed shock and disbelief at the violence that erupted in their usually quiet community. The investigation continues as authorities piece together the events that led to this devastating outcome.

As the community mourns, the sheriff’s office urges anyone experiencing domestic threats to report them immediately, emphasizing the importance of intervention before situations escalate.
