Nevada Teenager Charged with Open Murder After Allegedly Shooting Father and Younger Brother

RENO, Nev. – A 17-year-old Nevada girl is facing open murder charges after allegedly shooting her father and younger brother, stating she “couldn’t resist the urge to kill somebody,” according to court documents.

Reno Police arrested Mashenka Ann Marie Reid on adult charges of open murder Saturday. Open murder means the alleged crime could be first-degree murder, second-degree murder, or manslaughter.

Authorities responded to a home in Stead after a neighbor reported hearing muffled gunshots and someone shouting for help. Before police arrived, Reid called dispatch herself, confessing to shooting her father and brother. She told authorities, “I just couldn’t resist the urge to kill somebody.”

Upon arrival, officers found Reid’s father dead in the garage, having been shot multiple times, and her 4 to 5-year-old brother dead on the living room couch with a gunshot wound to the head. A handgun was found on the floor where Reid said she had dropped it. Her younger sister was thankfully found unharmed in a locked bedroom.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear at this time. The tragic incident has left the community in shock and searching for answers. Counseling services have been provided to those affected by the senseless violence. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.

This devastating event has sparked conversations about mental health and the importance of seeking help for those struggling with disturbing thoughts or impulses. It serves as a reminder of the critical need for mental health support and intervention, especially for young people who may be grappling with unresolved issues. As the community mourns the loss of two lives, there is a call for increased awareness and resources to address mental health challenges.
