Murder Mystery Unraveled: New Details Emerge in Tempe Woman’s Mysterious Death

Tempe, Arizona – Authorities from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office have disclosed new information regarding the investigation into the death of a Tempe woman found in a burning car a year ago, located west of the Valley. Detectives revealed that surveillance footage captured Mercedes Vega’s vehicle being abandoned near Culinary Dropout in Tempe, where it remained until its discovery. Notably, investigators confirmed that Vega did not drive the car to that location.

Vega’s body was later discovered in another vehicle set ablaze near Interstate 10, just a few miles west of Tonopah. The Maricopa County medical examiner’s report, released months later, detailed that Vega had sustained gunshot wounds, head injuries, and had bleach in her throat. Shockingly, the report concluded that although Vega was still alive when the fire ignited, she ultimately succumbed to smoke inhalation.

Although initially reported that Vega was en route to meet friends at Dave & Buster’s, further investigations revealed a different narrative. Interviews conducted by investigators disclosed that Vega abruptly canceled her dinner plans and instead indicated that she was heading to work. It was revealed that Vega occasionally worked as an exotic dancer on some nights of the week.

In a bid to uncover more details surrounding Vega’s tragic death, detectives executed search warrants on accounts and devices. This led to collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, including individuals connected to Vega. Subsequently, a walk is being organized by Vega’s friends and family to commemorate her memory and sustain their pursuit for justice until an arrest is made. The walk is scheduled to commence at 4 p.m. from Margaret T. Hance Park to MCSO headquarters in Phoenix.

Individuals with information that could assist in solving Vega’s murder are encouraged to come forward. A reward of up to $2,000 is being offered for credible tips leading to an arrest.
