Jackson, Louisiana – A man and a woman faced indictments on Thursday for murder and kidnapping charges after allegedly being involved in the killing of a Louisiana mother and abduction of her two daughters, with one of the daughters also losing her life.
The Tangipahoa Parish grand jury indicted 36-year-old Daniel Callihan on two counts of first-degree murder and single counts of aggravated kidnapping and second-degree kidnapping. Additionally, 32-year-old Victoria Cox was indicted on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, second-degree kidnapping, and accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.
In Louisiana, first-degree murder carries a penalty of life in prison or the death penalty. District Attorney Scott Perrilloux did not immediately respond to requests for comment on whether he plans to seek capital punishment.
The community was shaken by the incident, with Perrilloux acknowledging the devastating impact the case had on the family. He emphasized the importance of consulting with family members and various agencies before making a decision on seeking the death penalty.
Authorities also revealed that federal prosecutors are expected to build a case against the duo in Mississippi, where the incident originated. Perrilloux expressed his belief that the community deserved to see the case resolved locally.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest of Callihan on June 13 for his alleged involvement in the brutal acts of violence against Callie Brunett, 35, and her 4-year-old daughter, Erin. Callihan reportedly confessed to the crime and requested the death penalty, citing having no reason for his actions.
Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade disclosed that one of the trafficked children, Erin, was found dead in the woods, while her 6-year-old sister, Jalie, was located injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. Wade mentioned that efforts were ongoing to determine the manner of Erin’s death.
As the investigation unfolds, Cox’s role in the gruesome murders remains unclear. The tragic incident underscores the heinous nature of the crimes committed, leaving the community in shock and seeking justice for the victims.
