Murder for Hire: Florida Man Convicted in the Tragic Death of Student Who Reported Sexual Assault

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — A 37-year-old man has been convicted by a federal jury in connection with the murder of a 17-year-old high school student, Isabella Scavelli, who was shot just a day after reporting a sexual assault. Lenard White, along with his cousin Sheldon Robinson, was found guilty of multiple charges following a trial that revealed a tragic and convoluted series of events leading to Isabella’s death.

On February 6, 2023, Isabella and her mother approached authorities at the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office to report an assault allegedly committed by White. The next evening, as the mother and daughter were at home, an unexpected visitor knocked on their door shortly before midnight. When Isabella opened the door, Robinson unleashed a barrage of gunfire into their home, striking Isabella and critically injuring her mother, La Shawn Pope.

Prosecutors laid bare the gruesome details during the trial, stating the fatal bullet hit Isabella in the back as she sought refuge from the door. Her mother, severely injured, witnessed the horrifying scene while battling for her own life. Emergency responders quickly transported La Shawn to a hospital in Tampa, where her survival remained uncertain in the aftermath.

In a drawn-out investigation, authorities initially struggled to gather sufficient evidence to charge White and Robinson. Although they quickly identified the men of interest, significant delays ensued, preventing a swift resolution. A breakthrough came six months after the shooting when investigators unearthed the murder weapon, buried in Robinson’s backyard, which played a pivotal role in the prosecution’s case.

During court proceedings, evidence suggested that after learning Isabella had reported the assault, White attempted to orchestrate her murder. He allegedly offered Robinson $6,000 to kill her before fleeing to Georgia to establish an alibi. Both men faced accusations of engaging in extensive efforts to obstruct justice, including witness tampering and attempts to hide evidence.

Throughout the trial, both White and Robinson pleaded not guilty to the charges. A third accomplice, Keshawn Woods, previously entered a guilty plea for his involvement that night and awaits sentencing.

With the jury’s decision now in, White faces life sentences on several counts, including conspiracy to commit murder for hire and obstruction of justice. Sentencing is scheduled for January 30, 2026, where the gravity of their crimes will be formally addressed.

The loss of Isabella has reverberated throughout her community. A junior in high school, she was described as a talented athlete and an aspiring member of the military. Friends and family mourn her untimely death, grappling with the tragedy of a young life extinguished in such violent circumstances.

As the case draws to a close, its grim realities highlight the broader issues of violence against women and the dire consequences that can arise from unchecked criminal behavior. The justice system is now poised to deliver its final verdict against those responsible for this heartbreaking event.
