Murder: 88-Year-Old Memphis Man Charged After Fatal Shooting of Wife During Domestic Dispute

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An 88-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder after allegedly shooting his wife during a domestic dispute early Saturday morning. The incident unfolded at their residence on Philsdale Avenue, setting off a series of events that led to tragedy.

According to police reports, officers responded to a domestic violence call shortly after 2 a.m. on January 4. Upon arrival, they came into contact with Raymond Lee Dowdy Sr., who reportedly admitted to shooting his wife, May Dowdy, during an argument. Officers discovered her inside the home suffering from a gunshot wound.

May Dowdy was rushed to Regional One Health, where she succumbed to her injuries not long after arrival. Investigators immediately began gathering evidence, including executing a search warrant at the couple’s home, where they recovered a handgun. The firearm held a spent casing alongside live rounds in its chamber.

Following his confession, Dowdy was taken to the homicide bureau for questioning. However, he chose to exercise his right to remain silent after being informed of his rights. This decision has left parts of the investigation shrouded in uncertainty as authorities continue to piece together the events that led to the shooting.

Dowdy is currently being held without bond, and court records indicate he faces a mental evaluation scheduled for January 20, 2026. These assessments will be crucial in understanding his state of mind leading up to the incident.

As this case unfolds, the community reels from the implications of such violence occurring within a household that was once presumed to be a sanctuary. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities committed to uncovering all aspects of the tragic event. Detectives are expected to review evidence and speak with witnesses as they seek to provide clarity to a situation that has deeply affected those involved and the surrounding community.
