Three people were wounded Wednesday as investigators continued examining the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Koron Gibson two days earlier.
WAUKEGAN, Ill. — A memorial for a Waukegan man killed earlier in the week became the setting for another shooting Wednesday night, leaving three people wounded and adding a new investigation as authorities continued examining the homicide that prompted the gathering.
The latest gunfire occurred around 9 p.m. at Cinnamon Lake Towers on West Glen Flora Avenue. People had gathered in connection with a memorial for Koron Gibson, 29, who died after being shot Monday in Waukegan. Police have not confirmed that Gibson’s killing and the Wednesday shooting are connected, making the relationship between the two events a central unanswered question.
Police had not released the conditions of the three people wounded Wednesday or identified them publicly. No suspect had been announced, and investigators had not disclosed what happened immediately before the shooting. Neighbors described a sudden series of gunshots, followed by a large emergency response around the apartment complex.
Gibson was shot Monday evening in the 700 block of Lincoln Street. Police responding to reports of gunfire found multiple shell casings, including evidence that authorities said indicated more than one caliber of ammunition had been fired. Gibson was taken to Vista Medical Center East, where he died from his injuries.
The Lake County coroner’s office identified Gibson as a Waukegan resident. Local reporting based on information from the coroner said an autopsy determined he died from multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive for his killing.
The Monday investigation quickly expanded beyond the original crime scene. Witnesses told police that a white Nissan had left the area after the shooting. Officers later spotted a vehicle matching that description and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver did not stop, police said.
The resulting pursuit lasted about an hour and moved through Waukegan and other Lake County communities. Several law enforcement agencies became involved before Illinois State Police helped bring the pursuit to an end in Waukegan. Police said four juveniles associated with the vehicle were taken into custody.
Investigators later recovered two firearms and other evidence from multiple locations, according to police accounts. Authorities have not said publicly that any of the juveniles fired the shots that killed Gibson, and their detention does not by itself establish criminal responsibility. Public reports had not identified charges against them in Gibson’s death.
Gibson’s family and others planned a memorial gathering for Wednesday evening near the area where he had been shot. The later gathering at Cinnamon Lake Towers drew a sizable crowd, according to video and witness accounts. It was not clear whether the memorial had been relocated to the apartment complex or whether people went there after first gathering elsewhere.
A neighbor told CBS News Chicago she was watching television when she heard sounds she initially mistook for fireworks. She then realized gunfire was coming from outside. By the time she went out, police officers and emergency medical personnel were already converging on the parking area.
The Wednesday shooting created a separate crime scene while the homicide investigation involving Gibson remained underway. Police had not identified a shooter in the apartment-complex case, announced arrests or said whether investigators recovered a weapon from that scene.
Authorities also had not explained whether the three people wounded Wednesday were targeted, whether the shooting arose from a dispute or whether Gibson’s memorial had any role beyond being the setting where people were gathered. Police have specifically stopped short of linking the two shootings.
Both cases remained under investigation Thursday, leaving police to determine who opened fire at Cinnamon Lake Towers while detectives continued reviewing evidence surrounding Gibson’s killing and the pursuit that followed it.
